You should listen to us because YSA Ethiopia was created by young people who experienced the problem themselves.
We graduated from university with academic knowledge, but we realized that there was a gap between what we learned in the classroom and the practical skills needed in the workplace.
One of our founders experienced this very clearly. Just two months after graduation, he got an opportunity to apply for a job. Because he had been a top-performing student, he was confident in his academic background. But when he arrived, the employer gave him an examination that lasted for more than six hours. He passed the exam and was called back to sign an employment agreement.
But then the employer told him something that completely changed his perspective: "You have a strong academic background, but you lack some of the practical skills we need. We will train you for three months so you can become fully capable of doing the job."
Eventually, he left the company and moved on with his career. But the experience left us with a bigger question: If a top university graduate can leave university without some of the practical skills required to do a job, how many other young people are facing the same problem? We realized that the problem wasn't necessarily that young people were not capable. There was a gap between academic education and marketable skills.
YSA Ethiopia was created to help close that gap—to give young people access to practical, marketable, and digital skills that complement their education and prepare them for real opportunities. We are not trying to solve a problem we have only studied. We are building a solution to a gap we experienced ourselves.
